Charisse knew her husband was an alcoholic ...
when she made the decision to purchase the historic Johnny’s Bar & Grill in Hollister, California in January of 1996.
She even joked about the fact that she’d be getting his liquor at wholesale prices.
Her journey into the bar business had begun twenty years earlier when she got her first job as a cocktail waitress.
Never mind the fact that she wouldn’t be legally old enough to work in her field for four years. Putting food on the table and roof over her and her sons head was her priority and the money was good.
By the time she was 19, she was bartending and managing that bar.
In 1985 she got a job as a route driver for Granny Goose Foods. But, she kept her foot in the door of the bar business by working shifts as a cocktail waitress and bartender in local bars. Having a place of her own had always been her heart’s desire. When the opportunity to buy Johnny’s presented itself, her dream trumped common sense. In retrospect, buying a bar while married to an alcoholic looks to be foolhardy but she believes that God always had a plan.
A self-professed enabler and people pleaser, with an A-type personality, she referred to herself as the fixer. Due to her dysfunctional upbringing she came to believe that the only time that things went well was when she was in control. Her belief that she knew what people needed to do to improve their lives and her compulsion to share those views irritated those closest to her.
Her husband, Tommy, would say that she drove him to drink.
In reflection Charisse admits that before God’s intervention, the way she responded to Tommy’s alcoholism contributed to his problem.
The deterioration of his health and their marriage was imminent. Tommy’s request for a divorce in 2002 led Charisse to Al-anon and back to her Christian roots. The spiritual odyssey this led to resulted in a renewed faith, her husband’s sobriety, and a stronger and richer marriage than she ever dreamed possible.
A passion was born to help women like herself, whose brokenness leads them to dysfunctional behavior and a lack of self-esteem. She has an intense desire is to help women heal those wounded places through a deep and intimate relationship with Christ. Through self-examination, Biblical coaching and emotional support she leads women from broken and hurting to becoming healed and whole.
Charisse has personally dealt with abuses, both emotional and physical, and understands the struggles women face because of them.
Working with Charisse has been a positive experience. She helped me through a very dark time, and I'm not sure how I would have gotten through it without her. I was utterly stuck but with her advice and encouragement have been able to move forward in a positive way. She's provided me with many resources to grow spiritually. She is easy to talk to, non-judgmental and caring. I'm sure that Cat will remain a part of my life as I continue to grow spiritually and emotionally. I'd recommend her as a coach to anyone who wants to improve their life.
